Biomass originates from organic material from forestry and agriculture (such as trees and plants), from wastes and residues of biological origin, and from biodegradable fractions of waste. Common sources of biomass in Ireland are pulpwood, brash and sawdust.
Sustainable biomass is an established renewable fuel resource that can provide heat cheaper than most fossil fuels. It is most commonly available as wood chips or wood pellets.
As biomass is produced from waste wood, when this is combusted in a biomass boiler, it releases the same carbon as it would when left to rot on the forest floor.
Most biomass in Ireland is sourced within Ireland from Irish forests, sawmills and wood pellet manufacturing plants. Local supply of biomass will increase as forest cover in Ireland increases from its current level of 11% to 18% by 2050 in line with the government’s Forestry Strategy targets.
- Biomass fuel is the most cost-effective solution for renewable heating according to the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland. https://www.seai.ie/publications/Commercial-Fuel-Cost-Comparison.pdf
- Can do high temperature applications (that others cannot).
- Sustainable Fuel under Renewable Energy Directive II (Recast) with up to 95% GHG saving versus fossil fuel
- Exempt from Carbon Tax (The 2024 rate of carbon tax is €56 per tonne of CO2).
- Government Grant available through Support Scheme for Renewable Heat (SSRH) x 15 years.
- Abundance of fuel (Available Now).
- No need to increase MIC (kVA).
- >59% of all renewable energy in EU is bioenergy (a proven technology).
- Local economic benefits.
- No need to increase Maximum Import Capacity with the ESB (kVA).
Woodco will conduct a site survey and analyse energy bills and consult with the client and/or energy consultant to identify a suitable sized system.
Woodco provide detailed calculations to interested businesses on savings vs fossil fuels, SSRH grant payment, carbon tax savings and capital costs.
Any business that uses 500,000kwh per annum or over can avail of an ESCO. 500,000kwh is approximately 50,000 litres of oil or 75,000 litres of LPG per annum.
Any business can avail of the SSRH scheme, once the heat is used for commercial purposes, space, process or water heating is eligible. The businesses usage would need to be approx. over 100,000 kwh/10,000 litres of oil per annum to make it viable as there is certain administration costs associated with the ongoing obligations.
